This is consistent with the 195 days a year required by a teacher's Statutory Conditions of Service – the additional five days are for in-service training (INSET).

Leave of absences

We encourage good attendance. However, children who are too ill to come to school or may pass infection to others should not attend. When children are absent from school we ask parents to inform the school office by 9.00am on the first day of absence and to provide a note of explanation on the child’s return to school. We contact parents if we feel their children is too ill to stay at school.

Leave of absence will be given for attendance at medical or dental appointments or for examinations in music, dance etc. However, where possible such appointments should be made outside of school hours.

This is the advice from the Department for Children, Schools and Families:

“It is wholly appropriate for parents to keep children away from school when they are not well enough to attend lessons. But it is equally inappropriate for parents to keep children away from school for trivial ailments, particularly ailments which would not keep parents away from work. Where schools have concerns, they can and should challenge the parents’ explanation and seek evidence of the illness.”

Leave of absence requests

Amendments have been made to the 2006 regulations in the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013, which came into force from 1 September 2013.

The amendments make it clear that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances, and it is the headteacher who is to determine the number of school days a child may be away from school on these occasions.

There is no longer any reference to family holiday, extended leave or the threshold of ten school days.

As a result of these changes to legislation all Headteachers and Governing Bodies are instructed to implement this policy with regard to requests for leave of absence to give families a consistent and fair approach across all the schools.  .

This policy therefore makes clear that:

No absence will be authorised unless there are exceptional circumstances.

In these exceptional circumstances it is the headteacher that is to decide how many days of absence should be granted.

Our school has a ‘Leave of Absence Form’ that must be completed for any planned leave of absence.  Authorised absence will only be granted should the school deem that the case is “exceptional.”
