Five-pound challenge

Children’s attitudes about money are developed by the age of seven.

The five-pound challenge provides the children in Key Stage Two with the opportunity to develop enterprising mindsets, money management skills from an early age and learn key skills for life beyond the classroom. 

The children are randomly grouped across from Year Three to Year Six, before they begin to bring their business ideas to life over the course of 8 weeks. They were tasked with creating a brand, developing products to sell, and turning a profit, all while managing their own mini-business and working as a team. 

Throughout the project, pupils explored essential areas of business including; 

• Finance and budgeting
• Marketing and promotion
• Sales and customer service
• Creative design and advertising

Once created, they present their ideas to the Dragons' Den. If they are successful, they are awarded their £5 business loan. 

Before running their stalls, talking to customers and managing money on fair day! 

2024 - 2025

This was the first year of the five-pound challenge, and it was a huge success, raising £764.36. 

The stall that raised the most was Esme, Arianna and Lyra's book stall. 

2025 - 2026 

Another successful year! The children ran a superb range of stalls, from games to toys. This year's total was £840! 

The stall that raised the most was Scarlet, Ella, Georgia, Olivia and Jesse's lemonade stand, which turned into an ice water stand when they sold out to capitalise on the boiling hot weather.  

Tesco donation 

After hearing Ella's enthusiastic account of the five-pound challenge, activities and opportunities available within our school, we were lucky enough to receive a donation and open the new Treliske store. This donation was used to support our children's business initiatives and allow them to have access to more resources and grow their fundraising efforts.
